When Popcorn was brought to Pasadena Humane, we knew something was very wrong. He was sick and weak, suffering from severe vomiting and diarrhea. He was unable to keep any food down.
At first, we feared the worst. In young puppies like him, Parvo is often devastating, but his test came back negative. We hoped that meant Popcorn would quickly bounce back, but unfortunately, his illness kept getting worse. Despite supportive care and medication, he continued to vomit. His appetite disappeared and his little body grew weaker. X-rays didn’t show a clear obstruction, yet we knew something was very wrong and time was running out.
Our veterinary team made the critical decision to perform exploratory surgery. What we found could have cost him his life: a corncob lodged in his intestine. Corncobs may seem harmless, but they can be deadly for dogs. They don’t break down in the stomach, and once stuck, they block the intestines completely. Without surgery, puppies like Popcorn can suffer a painful, fatal rupture. Thanks to swift surgical intervention, our veterinary team skillfully removed the corncob. After recovering in our ICU, Popcorn has since healed and been adopted.
